From May 8th, 2023 onward, Japan downgrades COVID-19 to a ‘common infectious disease’. Minoh City mails a COVID-19 vaccination voucher to only those who have certain pre-existing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, congestive heart failure, and seniors (65 and over). According to the JET-ALT Terms and Conditions of Employment, you have 10 days of paid leave and 10 days of sick leave (unpaid). You can take a paid leave regardless of your reasons. When taking a sick leave, you need to submit a medical certificate from your doctor to prove the reason, but a sick leave will, nevertheless, be unpaid without exception. Paid sick leave is not legally required in Japan. If you used up all 10 days of paid leave and 10 days of sick leave, you would fall into absence which may affect your personnel evaluation. Taking absence without reasonable grounds may result in being penalized.
